The Me2 Project

PictureThis project focuses on the communication needs of deaf children and the aim of the project is to combat the isolation, loneliness and embarrassment that this group of children face. The Me2 project aims to train more people in deaf awareness and sign language to enable communication barriers to be removed. The three key components of the project are:

1. Family and friends training: Picture

This will enable the whole family to communicate more effectively with the deaf child. The Me2 project will run family sign language curriculum courses for extended families and friends. The curriculum will be child focused and deliver age appropriate language.

2. The Buddy Scheme:Picture

This will enable deaf children to integrate more effectively into the clubs and groups that they would like to attend. Interpreters and the presence of parents at these groups can be embarrassing for the child and a fully trained ‘Buddy’ may help to ease the child into the group in a more discreet and friendly way.

3. Teach the Teachers: Picture

The aim of ‘Teach the Teachers’ is to provide deaf awareness and BSL training to leaders of universal children’s clubs. We would provide language appropriate training for activities/sports leaders to enable them to communicate on a basic level with any deaf child in their group. Prime examples of areas to be covered would be swimming instructors, Scouts and Guides leaders, football coaches and ballet teachers.

All training would be by qualified BSL tutors. We would use deaf tutors wherever possible.

Please take the time to look over the further informational posters enclosed. If you would be interested in any of the schemes covered by the Me2 project please do get in touch with us.
