Prior to 1999 I had never been involved with deaf people. It was not until my second child Oliver was 16 months old that I discovered he was profoundly deaf. This started my family and I on a steep learning curve and with all this new found information gathered we decided Oliver should use sign language as his method of communication.
I quickly enrolled on a Stage 1 British Sign Language course and 3 years later was proud to pass the Stage 2 British Sign Language exam.I have now just completed pre Level 3 and hope to complete Level 3 in 2009.
I am also an active member of the Norfolk Deaf Children’s Society.

Hearing Support Service Co-ordinator

I joined the Deaf Association in May 2008, taking on the role of Hearing Support Service Co-ordinator. My first child Erin was born profoundly deaf in 2001 and this sparked my interest in the Deaf and Hard of hearing communities. I am very keen to expand the Hearing Support Service to benefit as many people as possible by reducing isolation and increase independence for hearing aid users in West Norfolk.

I was born deaf into a deaf family and have enjoyed growing up in the deaf community. My first language is BSL although I am able to lipread well and have good speech.

In my role as Deaf Advocate at WNDA I will be supporting deaf people and providing them with information and advice. Examples of where support can be provided are with issues relating to housing, benefits, family, running a home, technology etc. I am keen to help deaf people break down communication barriers, ensure they are not discriminated against and help them live full and rich lives.

My work with WNDA is on a part time basis. I also work with Sense which is a Deaf-Blind organisation this involves helping deaf-blind students learn to become independent.

In my spare time I enjoy teaching British Sign language level one for Adult Education.

Since 2005, I have been a chairperson for Norwich Deaf Social Club and I also occasionally help out with the Norwich Deaf Youth Club.

I have been married to Neil for nearly 18 years we have two children Megan who is 15 years and Ben who is 14 years old.  We are all hearing.

I first became aware of the deaf community through Amanda and Oliver, when she asked me to go with her to a meeting for the West Norfolk Deaf Children’s Society.    Eventually I became the secretary but had to stand down due to other commitments.

I have mainly spent my working life with children in schools and last football season I took on the role of Secretary for Watlington Youth Football club.

I am very pleased and proud to have got the job of Administrator here at the Deaf Association and hope that in some small way I can make a difference.
